An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess 2004

An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess

The two performers - Jordan Rudess on acoustic piano for the entire album and John Pretrucci alternating between classical and electric guitar are two of the best in the business. Drop into either one's website and you will find a list of credits and albums that are a testimony to two musicians who can create and perform with equal facility. Together, they are part of Dream Theater, a progressive rock group that has it's own long thread of musical accomplishment. They are used to playing together, they each have a great deal of respect for each other, making this a truly remarkable album. There is nothing typical here. From the frantic highspeed chase of The Bite of the Mosguito to the more stately pace of State of Grace each piece of this live concert shows off something else that they can do. Whether one player comes forward, or they are trading licks, or they are playing in concert, the music is always complex, textured, and beautiful to listen to. I like the softer pieces, like From Within and State of Grace best, but it simply is impossible to go wrong, no matter what tracks you play.

Stanley Jordan and Novecento - Dreams of Peace 2003

Stanley Jordan and Novecento - Dreams of Peace

Stanley Jordan's discovery in the early '80s rightfully earned a lot of headlines in the jazz world as he came up with a new way of playing guitar. Although he was not the first to use tapping, Jordan's extensive expertise gave him the ability to play two completely independent lines on the guitar (as if it were a keyboard) or, when he wanted, two guitars at a time. He had originally studied piano, although he switched to guitar when he was 11. After graduating from Princeton in 1981, Jordan played for a time on the streets of New York. Soon he was discovered, had the opportunity to play with Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie and, after recording a solo album for his own Tangent label, signed with Blue Note. Since then, his career has been surprisingly aimless. Stanley Jordan can play amazing jazz, but he often wastes his talent on lesser material, so one has to be picky in deciding which of his recordings to acquire. Among his many albums are 1985's Magic Touch, 1990s Stolen Moments, 1994's Bolero, 1996's Standards, Vol. 1, 2003's Dreams of Peace, and 2008's State of Nature. Written by Scott Yanow for All Music Guide.
This album is a very special co production of Novecento, whose appears to be Jordan plus the Nicolosi family: Dora (vocals), Lino (rhythm guitar), Rossana (bass) and Pino (keyboards). The disc falls into the common modern jazz trap of trying to cover too many bases: there's a Lite Jazz number to get on the radio ("Flying On The Sky"), there's a John Scofield-style shredfest ("Spring"), there's some New Age puffery with strings and vocal ("Tell Me Something"), there's a funk number ("I Can Show You Something"), and along the way the band never establishes an identity or mood. This wouldn't be such a problem if the tunes were stronger, but they're mostly simple, forgettable snatches of melody ("Destination Of My Heart"). Jordan co-wrote everything, but doesn't take a commanding role, mostly content to noodle his way through the grooves ("Sky Flower"), though he does construct a fine solo on the title track, and add a nice slippery outro to "Too Close To The Sun." Randy Brecker ("Destination Of My Heart") tops the guest list, which also boasts Gregg Brown (vocals), Leonardo Govin (trombone), Trio Solista (strings) and a host of percussionists. Released on Steve Vai's Favored Nations label, which is rounding up an admirable assortment of guitar virtuoso.

Stanley Jordan - Magic Touch 1985

Stanley Jordan - Magic Touch

Stanley Jordan is one of the most gifted jazz guitarists out there. Every song is uniquely stamped with his personality and talent. No matter if it is a mainstream jazz standard like Freddie Freeloader or a cover of a Beatles hit like Eleanor Rigby, each song is crafted carefully to communicate his vision with the listener. This album is a timeless piece of music. He had not been given an appropriate exposure by publicity. I know a lot of people say he plays "too clean" almost with no human touch. It somewhat is true, since the guitar he plays is different from all other guitars out there, giving a specific "synthesized" sound, or very clean sound. However, the phrases of his playing are simply incredible! And how about playing 2 guitarists at once! Just think about what he achieved for this instrument.

Greg Howe - Hyperacuity 2000

Greg Howe - Hyperacuity

I am a Greg Howe fan since 1992, and have always been impressed by his refusal to stick in the "shredder" rut. Although he is one of the most technically gifted rock guitarists, he is never without complex and interesting musical ideas. Ascend - his last album, was almost a step backwards, with neo-classical themes, but Hyperacuity takes Greg in a new, much jazzier direction. Although he will never be a "soft jazz"player, the influence of Larry Carlton is clear in some of these tunes, and Allan Holdsworth in others, with complex chord vamps and solos that leap around the neck. The closer you listen, the better it is. With a pair of headphones, you can hear the funk that is still underneath it all, and appreciate the intricate lines. Kevin Soffera is an amazing drummer, and the acoustic duet between Howe and his student Prashant Aswani is really amazing. Howe's closing rendition of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" is phenomenal, and gives the tune a whole new life. All in all a great turnout from Greg. I like all of his solo stuffs, but I think this one is the best.

Greg Howe - Introspection 1993

Greg Howe - Introspection

Like most of Greg Howe's albums, 'Introspection' again provides a glimpse into the "near impossible" of what is capable on a guitar. Greg's effortless virtuosity combines impeccable technique with uniquely tapped pentatonics, tasteful hyper-speed blues licks, and a wonderful sense of melody and rhythm. While most of the tunes on the album lean toward heavy blues laden fusion and straight "shred", Greg manages to mix things up a bit with a nice nylon-string piece dedicated to Jason Becker. Nevertheless, it is Greg's soaring lead playing that keeps you coming back for more. And you will want to listen a few times, if only to confirm that it was in fact a human that played so magnificently. One of the best Greg Howe album for this time.
